Rap Poem: A Bowl Of Distress

How’s it been going, guys? In today’s blog post, I will share with you a rhyming poem, or as I like to call it – a Rap Poem!

What’s A Bowl of Distress about?

A Bowl of Distress is a heartfelt story based on traumatic events. We follow the story through the point of view of a fish. Sounds crazy, right? I know what you are thinking. Anyhoo, I hope you enjoy my heartfelt poem, guys.

Rap Poem

Title: A Bowl Of Distress
Author: Podopheleus

Oh my! I am going round and round in circles.

I saw it with my own eyes. He forced your face down and hurt you.

Oh! I’ve seen it all now. I swear to …

Woefully. I’ve never been able to keep a journal.

I’m in an endless loop. When life throws a curveball.

I can’t put my feelings into words. I’m non-verbal.

My home is not my home. Bare windows without curtains or blinds.

You will not understand this but I wish I was born blind.

Witnessing traumatic events! I wish I would pass out.

The challenges of living alone in a glass house.

It’s a nightmare! The one man that wreaked havoc.

Seeing you lying in blood is too much to stomach.

I wish I could close my eyes for one sec.

Having said that, I’m wide-eyed and I swim in a bowl of distress.

I envy YOU for having the opportunity to blink.

Unable to close my eyes to experience a moment of bliss.

I feel like I’m drowning. I know. That’s rich, coming from me!

You have the right not to like men. You’ve always got me!

Come hell or high water, we will always be friends.

You and I both were completely thrown in at the deep end.

He is stressing me out. Tapping on the glass is torture.

Oh, metaphorically and physically speaking.

My home gets knocked off the table. I feel like a fish out of water.

He calls his dog while holding me in his hand.

We can’t choose our fate!

“Oh boy!! have I got a treat for you, Jack”

Brought closer to the hounds face.

What Inspired you to write this rap poem?

At one point in my life I felt so helpless. I felt like I was drowning. I found myself staring at my uncle’s fish tank. Watching the lethargically moving fish. As I gazed into the fish tank, I started wondering, what a harmonious life it must be. At that very moment I had an epiphany to write this poem.

I can whole-heartedly recommend journaling, scripting rhymes, poetry, story writing – any form of creative and reflective writing to help get you through tough times. Read more about why I believe journaling/scripting is good for mental health.

Using wordplay and metaphors in creative writing

When you play with words, writing is so much more fun. This rap poem is packed with word play and clever lines. Let’s examine more closely, shall we?

“I’m in an endless loop.

I can’t put my feelings into words. I’m non-verbal.

I envy YOU for having the opportunity to blink.

Unable to close my eyes to experience a moment of bliss.

I feel like I’m drowning. I know. That’s rich, coming from me!

You and I both were completely thrown in at the deep end.

I feel like a fish out of water.”

I love showing off my word play skills and using double entendres. In this poem, I touch on a lot of sensitive topics. For example toxic masculinity, abuse, loneliness, helplessness, hopelessness, violence against women and animal cruelty. I don’t know about you but the ending broke my heart. The Bowl Of Distress is what I call poetry in motion.

Want to more inspiration?

As some of you may know, one of my biggest inspirations for writing rhymes is the legend rapper MF DOOM! Read more about why and how he inspired me on my rapping/scripting journey.

My debut novel Triple-Formed features a rap poem titled Depersonalisation. Yet again I touch upon a sensitive subject while maintaining clever word play.
